THE WORLD'S MOST SUSTAINABLE VODKA?
Let's raise a glass to a new vodka that fights climate change
KOSKENKORVA CLIMATE ACTION - available in Germany from autumn onwards Fly less. Recycle furniture. Grow your own food. Drink .... Vodka? Yes, really. The vision is in the name of Koskenkorva Vodka Climate Action, a new Finnish spirit that will be launched in Germany this autumn and may soon be considered the hottest drink in town, as it is a true world first. The clear glass bottle with paper label and wooden cap not only contains the smoothest single-estate vodka exported from the Nordic countries, but is also incredibly sustainable as it is made from a unique method using regeneratively grown barley that helps combat climate change.
The forward-thinking drink has been made a reality by Nordic spirits company Anora Group with the help of the non-profit Baltic Sea Action Group Foundation and pioneering Finnish farmer Jari Eerola. His regenerative agriculture aims to pull CO2 out of the atmosphere, resulting in a reduction of carbon. If all farmers in the world switched to regenerative agriculture, theoretically up to 322 billion tonnes of CO2 could be removed from the atmosphere, almost as much as we emit globally in 10 years!
Recycling rate: 99.9
The climate-active barley is distilled in the award-winning distillery in western Finland, which also basically works with bioenergy and has an impressive recycling rate of 99.9%. Even the hulls of the barley left over during the distillation process are used to power the equipment.
The environmentally friendly production methods are not at the expense of taste, as evidenced by the smooth, creamy vodka from Finland with a peppery spiciness on the palate. The innovative, pure vodka has soft and subtle notes of vanilla, caramel and white flowers, making it pure and crisp on the palate. With hints of grain and herbs, it's still full of character. Isn't enjoying life all the more beautiful when it's not at the expense of the planet?
Excellent vodka made from the northernmost barley and pure spring water
Koskenkorva Climate Action is a further development of Koskenkorva Original, which has been produced in the village of the same name in Finland since 1953. The production of all Koskenkorva vodkas is based on the circular economy. The distillery has a recycling rate of 99.9 %. Even the barley husks left over from the vodka distillation process are reused to power the distillery's own bioenergy plant.
By-products are used as animal feed and carbon dioxide produced in the distillery is collected and used in greenhouse cultivation.
Koskenkorva's investment in the circular economy was already recognised in 2018 with the "Green Company of the year" award. In 2021, they received the "Vodka producer of the year" award.
Regenerative agriculture is a holistic farming method that aims to convert fields as emission sources into significant "carbon sinks" that mitigate climate change and protect biodiversity. By improving soil health, these methods increase carbon sequestration in agricultural soils while enabling better harvests and mitigating soil erosion.
The barley used to make Koskenkorva Climate Action was grown according to the Baltic Sea Action Group's definition of regenerative agriculture (www.bsag.fi/en).
